SUPPORTING BUDDY READING PROGRAMS AT SANBORN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Accomplished 1st Grade Readers               The Class with Mrs. Kish and Mrs. Meltzer

There are many happy first grade readers at the Sanborn Elementary school again this spring.  Following a fund request submitted by Mrs. Linda Meltzer, Sanborn’s Reading Specialist, several Andona members visited with Mrs. Kish's first grade class on Monday, May 22, 2006 to present a $1,000 donation to help sustain the "Buddy Reading Goes Home" program.

The students work with Mrs. Meltzer to choose appropriate books to develop their reading and comprehension skills.  The children bring these books home to share with family members.  They read aloud, then write a short journal entry about each book and draw an illustration.  By the end of each of the last 3 years, 99% of first graders have mastered reading at or above grade level in first grade.  On Monday, the first graders shared their journals with their classmates and then received certificates from Mrs. Meltzer for participating in the program.
